I love the comment from Janice - "I can only start from where I'm at" is a brilliant piece of wisdom that I want to apply more regularly to my own life.

Billy you are right on the money here! So much wisdom in your words. Although as you've indicated it's not change per se that people (or organizations want), it's the results that are brought about by change. So my advice? Start there...start with the goal.

So it's:

1. Decide (there's a powerful word) - Decide what you really really want.
2. Know why you really really want it. Yup, it's the emotion piece.
3. Choose new thoughts, beliefs, actions that support it. That means you must examine your current habits...all of them...ouch.
4. And commit (re-commit) to it EVERY day, by building in daily rituals that support your path.
5. Surround yourself with like-minded people who will support your growth. Hire a coach. Work with a mentor. Reduce time spent with detractors.
6. Acknowledge and celebrate your progress.

Sounds easy. It's not. Billy you are soooo right about that.

I love the questions you suggest we ask ourselves - brillant. And you are bang on about the fact that positive thinking is not enough to effect change. Not even close! A lot of people go wrong here.

That's because positive thinking comes from the conscious brain; but for all it's brilliance, the conscious brain controls less than 5% of our behaviour. It's why willpower fails us so often.

As you've pointed out Billy, the secret to long lasting change lies in our subconscious progamming. For that is where our beliefs lie. Change those, and you're on your way!!

Loved your post Billy. Love your wisdom. Love you.

Change can be very hard for people. One of the courses I took during my Masters in Leadership at Trinity Western University was called "Leadership and Change". It turned out to be one of my favorites. I watched my father-in-law lead through much change at his growing church and admired how he did so much well. But when you talk about looking inward, it reminded me of the time he and his wife were given exemption passes to run the Boston Marathon. They had been runners, but after the death of one of their sons, had not run seriously for a while. Realizing he had to get training, my father-in-law stepped on a tread mill and started running. He said he lasted about 2 minutes before realizing he was in rough shape. He stepped off the treadmill, looked in the mirror and told himself, "I can only start from where I'm at". He moved through this time starting from that point and successfully ran the Boston Marathon. Change in leadership does indeed start with ourselves and first looking in the mirror.

Thanks for the blog post.
