The following is an exerpt from ” The AllStar Sales Book” published in 2008. Maybe I was 2 years ahead:
Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks does many small things for his team that he believes makes a big difference. For example, he provides an excellent team environment and ensures that his players have a positive experience because he knows that will help them excel. So when his team is on the road he makes sure that his players’ hotel rooms have oversize beds. This makes them more comfortable, helps them rest better, and improves their attitudes. When they arrive home from away games, he has their cars waiting for them on the airport
tarmac, cleaned and polished.
Do Mark Cuban’s actions make a difference? Cuban is a controversial figure and the media has said a lot of good and bad about him. However, before Cuban bought the Mavericks the public and media considered them the dogs of the NBA, one of the worst teams ever. Now, the Mavericks are one of the best teams in the league.
Cuban understands that he doesn’t have to do these things as an owner, but he believes it is vital to the team’s success for him to show his appreciation for its efforts and to build a commitment to excellence in every way. In turn, his team responds with loyalty and high performance.
I expect that the Mavericks will be a top-performing, competitive team for many years to come.
Go Mavs!
